Spotify has announced the expansion of its AI-powered “Prompted Playlists” feature to Premium subscribers in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. This follows successful initial testing in New Zealand and a recent launch in the U.S. and Canada, marking a significant step in the platform's personalized music discovery.

The Prompted Playlists tool empowers users to generate bespoke playlists by simply articulating their desired listening experience in natural language. Rather than manually searching for individual tracks or artists, subscribers can convey a specific mood, scenario, or inspiration, and Spotify's AI will curate the perfect soundtrack.

Accessing the feature is straightforward: users navigate to “Create,” select “Prompted Playlist,” and then input their request in English. The system is engineered to interpret a wide array of themes, from specific moods and aesthetic preferences to cherished memories. Prompts can range from broad concepts to highly detailed specifications, incorporating musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or even deriving inspiration from a TV show, movie, or a personal milestone. Users also have the flexibility to specify whether the generated playlist should primarily feature new music or draw from their existing library.

Upon submission of a prompt, Spotify's artificial intelligence promptly crafts a customized playlist meticulously aligned with the user's request. This sophisticated system leverages the user’s individual listening history while also integrating current music trends and cultural influences. Furthermore, each selected song is accompanied by a concise explanation, providing valuable insight into its inclusion within that particular playlist.

Users are afforded extensive control over their generated playlists, with options to refine them by adjusting their initial prompts or initiating a new creation process. For individuals whose musical preferences are in constant evolution, playlists can be conveniently scheduled to refresh automatically on either a daily or weekly basis, ensuring a continuously updated listening experience.

As this feature remains in its beta phase, Spotify has indicated that modifications may occur as the company gathers user feedback. Additionally, the platform currently enforces usage limits, with some users reporting reaching these thresholds after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.

This rollout is part of Spotify's broader commitment to integrating AI across its platform. Recent innovations include Page Match, which enables users to scan a physical book page to instantly jump to the corresponding section in an audiobook, and the "About This Song" feature. The platform also enhanced its song lyrics functionality to offer global translations and offline access. Moreover, a recent partnership with SeatGeek now allows listeners to easily discover concert ticket links directly on artist pages or within upcoming tour date listings in the app.

Internally, Spotify has extensively deployed AI throughout its operational workflows. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström recently highlighted this impact, noting that the company’s top developers have not written a single line of code since December, attributing this efficiency directly to AI integration.

Beyond music and audiobooks, Spotify is further expanding its business by venturing into physical book sales. Soon, users in the U.S. and U.K. will gain the ability to purchase physical copies of books directly through the Spotify application, diversifying its retail offerings.
