Universal Music Group has become the inaugural partner to finalize a crucial licensing agreement for Spotify's forthcoming add-on service.
Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) have officially announced a licensing deal designed to empower users to generate AI-created remixes and covers of streaming songs. This innovative feature will be offered as a premium add-on for existing Premium subscribers. Artists will retain the option to decline participation in the program, but those who choose to engage will be entitled to collect royalties from these AI-generated creations.
This development follows Spotify's announcement in October of last year, where it revealed collaborations with UMG and other major labels, including Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe, to develop "responsible AI products." While the precise nature of these products remained undefined at the time, this new service marks the first concrete outcome of that collaborative initiative.
Spotify has previously outlined the core principles guiding its AI program: ensuring choice in participation, guaranteeing fair compensation and new revenue streams, and fostering deeper artist-fan connections.
