Reports from The New York Times and CNBC indicate that SpaceX intends to commit an initial investment of at least $55 billion towards its "Terafab" chip plant situated in Austin, Texas. This figure emerges from a public hearing notice filed in Grimes County, Texas, pertaining to a meeting where the company will seek tax incentives for the project.
SpaceX projects that should subsequent development phases proceed, the total investment could escalate to $119 billion. When Musk first unveiled this initiative in March, he outlined bold objectives for the plant to generate sufficient chips to power up to 200 gigawatts annually for terrestrial computing and an impressive one terawatt for space-based applications. Concurrently, SpaceX is expanding its global data center infrastructure, including its "Colossus" facility in Memphis, Tennessee, which recently secured a contract to support Anthropic's AI models.
This Texas-based facility will be jointly operated by SpaceX and Tesla, producing chips intended for use by both entities. Musk has specified that these chips will be integral to advancements in AI, robotics, and space-based data centers. Furthermore, Intel announced last month its partnership in the design and construction of Terafab, stating, "Our ability to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab’s aim to produce 1 TW/year of compute to power future advances in AI and robotics."
