Apple has unveiled the latest iteration of its mixed reality operating system, visionOS 27, during its WWDC keynote presentation on Monday. A standout feature is the integration of visual intelligence, enabling Siri to interact seamlessly with both real and virtual elements within a user's field of view. This advancement allows Vision Pro wearers to leverage the updated Siri AI assistant and its new dedicated app to inquire “about anything in your physical or digital space, instantly.”
Developers can access the visionOS 27 beta starting today, with a public beta scheduled for next month, ahead of its official launch in the fall. The Siri AI capability within visionOS 27 will initially roll out as a beta feature later this year, exclusively supporting English. Notably, this Siri AI will be available in the EU from its launch, bypassing the delays experienced by its iPhone and iPad counterparts.
Upon its full release, visionOS 27 will introduce several enhancements aimed at enriching the user experience. Users will be able to transform their panoramic photographs into immersive scenes and environments. The Vision Pro will benefit from Wi-Fi connectivity that is “up to 3x faster,” alongside a new “extra-small” widget size, offering greater customization options. Notifications will become more interactive, expanding simply by a user's gaze. Furthermore, the Control Center in visionOS 27 has been redesigned into three distinct sections: notifications and playback, core controls, and environments, for improved navigation.
A significant innovation in visionOS 27 is the introduction of curved windows. These function similarly to physical curved monitors, drawing the edges of content closer to the user without sacrificing screen real estate, effectively wrapping virtual displays around the user's space. Initial applications slated to support this feature include Safari, Freeform, and Multiview on Apple TV.
Recalling previous advancements, last year’s visionOS update brought substantial improvements, including support for PSVR 2 controllers, hands-free navigation via Look to Scroll, the convenience of unlocking an an iPhone while wearing a Vision Pro, and the ability to relay calls from an iPhone. That update also refined Apple’s 3D “Persona” avatars and introduced spatial widgets, allowing users to "place" virtual objects, such as a clock, anywhere in their physical environment where they persist.
