During his concluding earnings call as Apple's Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook indicated that the highly anticipated upgrade to Siri's artificial intelligence capabilities might incorporate certain paywalled features. Cook acknowledged that these strategies remain flexible, yet he foresees a model where users could acquire additional computational power for Siri AI through Apple's current iCloud+ subscriptions, which also provide expanded cloud storage.

“We do believe there will be people that want to use [Siri AI] a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+, where people can buy up the stack on iCloud+, and we’ll see how the pickup for that is,” Cook stated on Thursday. He added, “But we could not be more excited about where [Siri AI] is.”

This approach aligns with the prevailing model adopted by many other prominent AI providers, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which typically offer a foundational free version to consumers alongside an optional upgrade for enhanced usage.

The enhanced Siri AI is currently accessible within the iOS 27 beta program and is slated for a wider public release later this fall.

John Ternus, the long-serving Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is poised to assume leadership during a pivotal period for the company following Tim Cook's transition. Apple has notably lagged in its development of a sophisticated AI assistant, to the extent of collaborating with its direct competitor, Google, by licensing a tailored Gemini model to enhance Siri. The extensive delays surrounding the Siri AI overhaul also led Apple to disburse $250 million to resolve a class action lawsuit concerning the marketing of the iPhone 16’s AI functionalities.

Furthermore, Apple, much like its counterparts in hardware manufacturing, faces significant challenges in securing the necessary supplies to satisfy consumer demand. An industry-wide shortage of AI-driven RAM has driven up the cost of hardware production, prompting companies such as Meta, Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony to increase prices on various devices. While Apple implemented price hikes for Macs and iPads last month, it has not yet altered the pricing for its current iPhone lineup.
