Shopifypresented a new site-building tool on Thursday known as Canvas, which allows merchants to establish their Shopify stores simply by conversing with artificial intelligence.

Although Shopify previously provided a competent no-code builder that required rearranging modular sections and blocks within a selected theme, achieving deeper customizations typically necessitated editing code or hiring a developer.

In contrast, Canvas enables merchants to instruct Shopify’s AI agent, Sidekick, to construct their site through a chat interface. As the artificial intelligence executes modifications, Canvas displays the outcomes in real time, permitting merchants to view the store's overall appearance as it forms or zoom in on specific details.

Notably, this is not a static preview but rather the rendering of the actual code powering the store, according to Shopify. This capability allows merchants to test page interactivity and animations, as well as view pages as they would appear across various screen sizes. Additionally, Sidekick captures screenshots to align with the merchant's perspective during site updates.

The launch of Canvas signifies a broader transition toward a future where creating websites no longer requires direct coding skills. It joins a competitive landscape of AI-driven site-building tools from platforms like Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, alongside vibe-coding solutions such as Lovable and Replit.

Merchants retain the option to click on individual elements for direct editing, but the primary workflow is expected to involve verbally instructing Sidekick on desired changes.

While Sidekick already existed to write code, build applications, and customize themes, this marks the first time it has been integrated into a comprehensive site-building product like Canvas, allowing users to view the entire store and navigate around while modifying the site's actual files.

To facilitate this functionality, Shopify enabled Sidekick to interact directly with the theme's files and simplified the theme architecture, making the store's structure, logic, and design more accessible for the AI to comprehend and alter.

Although the product is currently in its nascent stages and requires further refinement, Canvas has the potential to lower the barrier to entry for aspiring online sellers who lack the financial resources for professional developers or the time to learn coding.
