Chinese AI Giant SenseTime Reduces Singapore Office Space Amid Challenges
Originally reported bybloomberg
SenseTime Group Inc., a Chinese AI pioneer, is reducing its office space in Singapore, signaling scaled-back ambitions as it faces intense competition in the evolving AI landscape.  The company is relocating from a prime downtown office in Frasers Tower to a smaller, less expensive location, reflecting cost-cutting measures during a challenging period. This move comes as other tech firms like ByteDance are expanding internationally to counter economic slowdowns in China, highlighting contrasting strategies within the industry.  Losing Alibaba as a financial backer in 2023 has further pressured SenseTime, making it difficult to compete in a crowded AI market with rivals ranging from established giants to well-funded startups like Moonshot AI and Zhipu. Singapore’s prime office market, which previously relied on the growth of Chinese firms, is also feeling the impact of such retrenchments.  While office vacancies in the central business district fell to 6.9% in late 2024, they had previously hit a two-year high, underscoring the volatility in the sector.  SenseTime’s downsizing is a stark contrast to its earlier ambitions when it envisioned creating a local AI innovation hub in Singapore and tripling its workforce by 2024. The company is now undergoing a restructuring to focus on generative AI, a field it helped pioneer when it received regulatory approval for related services last year.  However, competition is fierce, and SenseTime’s growth has been hindered by U.S. blacklisting in 2019 over alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang, which the company has denied.  These sanctions limited its access to essential components and capital, further exacerbated by curbs on advanced AI chips and equipment sales to Chinese firms. Despite its early success in facial recognition and other areas, SenseTime now faces significant hurdles in maintaining its position in the global AI race.
