Samsung has offered the public its initial in-person preview of its forthcoming smart glasses, unveiling two new designs and key specifications, including an impressive 9-hour battery life. Developed in collaboration with Google and eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, these glasses are scheduled for a fall launch.
Following earlier teasers and the reveal of two initial designs at Google I/O in May, Samsung has now showcased two additional frames. Both new designs maintain a somewhat boxy aesthetic, featuring a squared-off black pair from Gentle Monster and a more rounded, red-brown option from Warby Parker. Jaein Choi, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s mobile experience division, informed CNBC that "more designs" are in development.
This event marked the first opportunity to observe any of the four frames firsthand, though direct interaction, such as trying them on, was not permitted. The glasses are notably lightweight, comparable in heft and size to conventional thick-rimmed eyewear. Integrated features include discreet speaker and microphone grilles along the stems, a singular button on the right, a power switch on the left, and a front-mounted camera accompanied by a recording LED. Aesthetically, they resemble everyday glasses, akin to Meta’s collaborations with Ray-Ban and Oakley, suggesting broad appeal beyond potential privacy considerations.
Powering these new smart glasses is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, the identical silicon found in Meta's most recent smart glasses. Samsung reports an impressive battery life of up to nine hours on a single charge, complemented by a charging case that provides up to seven full recharges.
Users will have the flexibility to utilize either Google Gemini or Samsung’s Bixby with the glasses. The integrated AI functionalities, while familiar, include capabilities such as message summarization, live translation, navigation assistance, and the analysis or description of visual content captured by the cameras.
Echoing Meta's approach, a recording LED illuminates when the camera is actively capturing video. Jaein Choi confirmed to Bloomberg that the glasses are designed to prevent recording if the LED is detected as blocked or obscured, a safeguard similar to Meta’s. However, this measure did not prevent Meta’s glasses from being colloquially labeled as "pervert glasses." It remains to be seen whether Samsung and Google will implement additional strategies to address what Choi characterized as "an industry-shared problem."
While Samsung has yet to disclose a definitive release date or pricing for the forthcoming glasses, Choi did categorize them as a "premium" product.
