Available as a DAW plug-in, Melody Flip provides access to approximately 250 "Palettes," which are thematic collections of musical ideas categorized by genre. Users can begin from scratch to generate combinations of melody, chord progressions, basslines, or drum patterns. Alternatively, they can upload a reference track and have the tool build upon its melodic concepts.
Unlike Suno or Udio, Melody Flip does not produce finished songs with vocals and full arrangements. Instead, it supplies simple musical loops intended to inspire further work. Control over the outputs is relatively limited; for instance, users cannot input complex text prompts to request specific sonic elements like "acoustic country rock with clean male vocals, literate singer-songwriter, gentle brushed drums, and sparse pedal steel at 98BPM" to generate a Jason Isbell impersonation. Essentially, users select a genre, note density, BPM, and musical key and accept the result. Although the genre options are granular, ranging from "80s disco" and "90s R&B" to more niche styles like "Kawaii Future Bass" and "Anime World."
The sound selection supports the notion that outputs are not meant to be used out of the box. The available presets resemble general MIDI tones found in 90s video games. Following years of perceived stagnation and customer alienation due to the messy Roland Cloud subscription service, the company has recently returned to form.
