Riverside, a prominent maker of video and podcast recording tools, is empowering its users with a new avenue to connect with their audiences: newsletters.

However, Riverside's strategy is not to directly challenge established newsletter platforms such as Mailchimp, Substack, Beehiiv, or Ghost. Instead, recognizing the abundant content already generated by its user base, the company is introducing an AI tool within its recording suite. This tool enables users to transform their existing videos and podcasts into newsletters, which can then be sent directly from the application. Users also retain the option to craft and dispatch newsletters from scratch, without utilizing the AI conversion feature.

“Substack and Beehiiv start you at a blank page. But our creators and business customers are already producing rich, information-dense spoken content on Riverside. For most people, speaking is easier and more natural than writing from scratch, and the ideas are already there, in the conversation. So instead of asking them to start over in a separate tool, we help them turn a recording they’ve already made into newsletter-ready content with far less effort,” Riverside’s founder and CEO Nadav Keyson informed TechCrunch.

The company is also upgrading its recording suite to support multi-camera recording configurations. Additionally, it is providing users with the capability to integrate remote guests into their recordings.

This update further introduces new AI functionalities. Users can leverage AI to generate a preliminary draft of a recording immediately upon its completion. The AI assistant can also produce engaging hooks and content tailored for various social media platforms. Moreover, Riverside is incorporating an AI video enhancement feature, specifically trained on conversational video podcasts, which is designed to improve the lighting, depth, and sharpness of recorded material.

Riverside, which has successfully raised over $60 million in funding, joins a multitude of platforms that are venturing into alternative publishing avenues to either diversify or expand their revenue streams. For instance, Substack launched a built-in recording studio in March, directly competing with Riverside's core offering, and in April, the newsletter platform Beehiiv also expanded into podcasting. In June, the social network Mastodon announced its intention to allow users to publish their posts as newsletters.
