Reddit announced on Thursday that it is commencing trials for a new AI-powered search tool. This innovation is designed to synthesize community recommendations and align them with products offered by the company’s various shopping and advertising partners.
Initially, a select group of users within the U.S. will begin to encounter search results that incorporate interactive product carousels. These carousels will display essential details such as pricing, images, and direct links to purchase locations.
This development signifies Reddit’s broader strategic initiative to merge its community-driven platform with robust e-commerce capabilities. The move follows the successful launch last year of its inaugural shoppable ad product, Dynamic Product Ads (DPA), which presents personalized product recommendations to users based on their individual interests.
Consequently, users participating in this test who search for queries like “best noise-canceling headphones” or “electronic gift ideas for a college student” will now find a carousel of relevant products positioned at the bottom of their search results.
This product carousel will specifically feature items that have been directly mentioned by users in discussions, related posts, and comments. Should a user tap on a product, they will be able to view more detailed information before being directed to the respective retailer’s website to complete a purchase.
“This feature surfaces top-recommended products directly from discussions, giving redditors instant information about any product,” the company stated in a recent blog post. It continued, “This test is designed to make Reddit easier to navigate while keeping community perspectives at the center of the experience. We’ll continue learning from how people use this new feature and refine the experience over time.”
While platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have long integrated shopping functionalities, Reddit is now actively pursuing similar integrations. It is also worth noting that Reddit is not the sole tech platform recently exploring AI-driven shopping, as OpenAI’s ChatGPT introduced an “Instant Checkout” feature last September, allowing users to make purchases from Etsy and Shopify directly within their conversations.
Thursday’s announcement builds upon remarks made by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman during the company’s earnings release last week. Huffman highlighted the platform’s AI search engine as potentially the next significant opportunity for the business, not only in terms of product enhancement but also as a powerful revenue driver.
Huffman also reported a substantial 30% growth in weekly active users for search over the past year, increasing from 60 million to 80 million. Furthermore, weekly active users for the AI-powered Reddit Answers feature experienced a significant rise, escalating from 1 million in the first quarter of 2025 to 15 million by the fourth quarter of the same year.
