Reddit has historically driven massive traffic through Google searches, with users often appending "Reddit" to queries. However, as search traffic dwindles due to the rise of AI-powered search results, the platform is reconsidering its connection to the open web. In its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, the company revealed plans to transition toward a primarily "logged-in experience."

This strategic pivot aims to safeguard its data from unauthorized AI scraping, enabling the company to instead establish lucrative licensing agreements with artificial intelligence model providers. Beyond data protection, this shift is intended to enhance revenue streams even as the platform faces daily active user declines in its primary market, the United States.

During the third quarter, Reddit’s global daily active users remained flat quarter-over-quarter, reaching 130.3 million, while U.S. daily active users fell from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million in the third, marking a 2% year-over-year decrease.

This trend is not isolated to Reddit; the transition to an AI-centric web has affected most publishers by diminishing click-through rates, as AI-generated summaries answer queries without requiring site visits. Furthermore, Google’s traditional "ten blue links" have become less relevant, a change that has begun to impact Google's own financial performance.

At Reddit’s scale, the economic impact of this decline is significant. The company reported a weekly average drop of over 1 million search traffic referrals in October. They warned that if the trend persists, daily active users could see a low-double-digit percentage decline by the next quarter, potentially reducing the user base to roughly 115 million to 117 million.

Conversely, the company has significantly improved its ability to monetize its audience despite slowing growth. Revenue surged 53% year-over-year to $895 million, exceeding Wall Street expectations of approximately $875 million. Net income rose 74% to $283 million, driven by a 54% increase in advertising revenue to $847 million and a 35% rise in non-advertising revenue, which includes AI data-licensing business, to $48 million.

Despite a 2% year-over-year drop in U.S. users, Reddit’s average revenue per daily active user in the U.S. climbed 53% to $13.82. Globally, this metric increased 36% year-over-year to $6.87, suggesting that logged-in users are more valuable to advertisers.

Moving to a logged-in model could further bolster these figures because authenticated users typically offer higher value. Unlike logged-out visitors who often arrive via search, logged-in users provide more data regarding interests and behavior, which facilitates better ad targeting and personalization.

These signals will also enable Reddit to offer a more personalized user experience, including tailored feeds and recommendations for new communities. This includes promoting posts to the new algorithmic "For You" feed, which combines content from subscribed groups with interest-based suggestions.

This monumental shift could serve as a warning for the future of the open internet. "I don’t know about you, but as someone whose life has been defined by the open internet, it’s a big change for me," wrote Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman. He concluded, "But I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the right decision for our platform and the right decision for our business."

The company emphasized that this transition will not happen overnight. Initial tests will take place in select international markets during the fourth quarter, with no global rollout timeline established yet. Reddit also acknowledged the importance of maintaining access to a logged-out front page.

Additionally, the company clarified that logging in does not compromise anonymity. The option to browse anonymously via "incognito mode" will remain, though that feature is currently being rebuilt. Huffman noted that defining the boundaries between logged-in and logged-out experiences remains a complex challenge but stated that this evolution is the necessary step forward for the platform.
