Reddit recently indicated that its AI-powered search engine represents a significant future opportunity for its business, not only as a product enhancement but also as a key revenue driver impacting its financial performance. During the company's fourth-quarter earnings call, an update was provided on plans to merge traditional and AI search capabilities, with a hint that while search is not yet monetized, it constitutes "an enormous market and opportunity."

Specifically, the company anticipates that its generative AI search will offer superior results for the majority of user queries.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman highlighted a particular strength, stating, "There’s a type of query we’re, I think, particularly good at — I would argue, the best on the internet — which is questions that have no answers, where the answer actually is multiple perspectives from lots of people."

Huffman contrasted this with traditional search, which he described as primarily navigational, helping users locate the correct link to a topic or subreddit. He added that Large Language Models (LLMs) are also proficient, if not better, at this function, concluding, "So that’s the direction we’re going."

The executive also reported substantial growth in search engagement, with weekly active users for search increasing by 30% over the past year, from 60 million to 80 million. Concurrently, weekly active users for the AI-powered Reddit Answers surged from 1 million in the first quarter of 2025 to 15 million by the fourth quarter of the same year.

"We’re seeing a lot of growth there, and I think there’s a lot of potential too," Huffman remarked.

Reddit is actively working to modernize the AI answers interface, aiming to deliver more media-rich responses, with pilot programs for these enhancements already in progress.

The company is also strategically repositioning itself from merely a social site to a primary destination for answers. To this end, Reddit informed investors that it plans to eliminate the distinction between logged-in and logged-out users starting in Q3 2026, leveraging AI and machine learning to personalize the site experience for every visitor.

Earlier in 2025, the company had announced its intention to integrate its AI search feature, Reddit Answers, with its conventional search engine to enhance the end-user experience. In the fourth quarter, Reddit reported "significant progress" in unifying its core search and AI capabilities. It also rolled out Reddit Answers in five new languages and is piloting dynamic agents alongside search results that incorporate "media beyond text."

While Reddit recognizes the intrinsic value of its AI answers, it is also monetizing its extensive data through a growing content licensing business, which allows other companies to train their AI models. This licensing revenue, reported as part of Reddit’s "other" revenues (non-ad revenue), saw an 8% year-over-year increase to $36 million in Q4, contributing to a 22% rise to $140 million for the full year 2025.
