Proton, a company renowned for its privacy-centric productivity applications, last year unveiled Lumo, its public-facing AI chatbot. This Tuesday marked a significant advancement for the platform as it received a comprehensive upgrade.
The newly released Lumo 2.0 introduces a suite of enhanced capabilities, including sophisticated image recognition and generation functionalities. Users are now empowered to upload images to Lumo for detailed analysis or editing. Furthermore, mirroring the capabilities of other advanced large language models, Lumo can now generate custom imagery based on user prompts.
Version 2.0 also extends Lumo's utility within "Projects," a feature designed to facilitate document uploads and collaborative work across Proton's integrated services such as email and cloud storage. A key addition to Projects is user-controlled persistent memory, enabling Lumo to recall and apply user preferences consistently across multiple conversational sessions.
According to the company, this update renders Lumo substantially more powerful than its predecessor. Proton states that Lumo 2.0 processes most queries up to 76 percent faster than its previous iteration. Additionally, a new "thinking mode" has been integrated to address more complex problems and intricate questions effectively.
“Lumo 2.0 has been re-engineered from the ground up and the introduction of thinking mode gives it powerful new capabilities,” stated Andy Yen, Founder and CEO at Proton. He further added, “Lumo 2.0 demonstrates that users no longer need to choose between powerful AI capabilities and meaningful privacy protections.”
In terms of general utility, the public version of Lumo appears to offer a comparable experience to other leading chatbots on the market. It delivers answers in a format similar to Gemini and ChatGPT, providing an equivalent level of detail and contextual understanding.
However, Proton distinctively positions Lumo through its robust privacy safeguards. The platform employs a "zero-access encryption architecture," ensuring user data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, with access exclusively limited to the user. Proton also asserts that no server-side logging of conversational sessions is retained, guaranteeing that no personnel at Proton can view the content of user interactions. Crucially, the company pledges never to utilize customer data for AI training purposes or to share it with any third parties.
Lumo 2.0 is now immediately accessible. Beyond the complimentary public version, Proton offers premium "Plus" and "Professional" tiers, which provide subscribers with significantly expanded access and resources.
