Prime Intellect, a burgeoning startup specializing in providing computing power and advanced software tools for developing AI agents, has successfully closed a Series A funding round, securing an impressive $130 million. This significant investment values the company at $1 billion.

The substantial funding initiative was spearheaded by Radical Ventures, with notable participation from a consortium of leading institutional investors including Nvidia Ventures, Intel Capital, Dell Technologies Capital, and Iconiq. The round also saw contributions from a distinguished roster of angel investors, comprising founders of prominent companies such as Aravind Srinivas (Perplexity), Aaron Levie (Box), Winston Weinberg (Harvey), Jeff Wang (Cognition), and Brendan Foody (Mercor).

Established in 2024, Prime Intellect's core mission is to empower organizations with the capability to train their own sophisticated agentic systems, thereby reducing reliance on established frontier AI laboratories. While such an endeavor would have been profoundly challenging mere years ago, the evolution of reinforcement learning techniques – which iteratively reward successful task completion and penalize errors – now enables companies to effectively become their "own AI lab" by finely tuning models for specific business applications.

Despite the emerging feasibility of bypassing closed AI labs, the underlying infrastructure required to build and deploy these systems remains exceedingly complex. Consequently, most companies currently lack the specialized expertise necessary to integrate these disparate components into a robust, production-ready solution.

This is precisely where Prime Intellect offers its transformative solution.

David Katz, a partner at Radical Ventures, commented on the company's prowess, stating, “They’ve stitched this together and built it in such a way that they’re operating at the frontier in a way that’s affordable.” He further elaborated that while competitors may offer fragmented solutions, Prime Intellect distinguishes itself by delivering the full capabilities of a top-tier AI lab as a "one-stop shop" for comprehensive development.

Prime Intellect's innovative approach has rapidly attracted a diverse clientele, including industry leaders like Ramp, Zapier, and Flapping Airplanes. These customers subscribe to a hosted version of Prime Intellect's tools, and this swift adoption has propelled the company to an impressive annualized revenue run rate of $100 million.

This remarkable growth is largely attributed to the tangible results delivered by the platform. For instance, Ramp leveraged Prime Intellect to construct an agent designed to extract answers from complex spreadsheets. Ramp’s co-founder and co-CEO Karim Atiyeh confirmed in a statement, “The result beat the frontier models on accuracy while running at faster speeds and a fraction of the cost.”

Another pivotal factor fueling Prime Intellect’s expansion is the growing realization among enterprises regarding the inherent risks associated with building upon the platforms of major frontier AI labs.

Companies are increasingly hesitant to entrust their proprietary information to providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, fearing a potential loss of control over their sensitive data. Furthermore, there is a heightened apprehension about relying on models that could be abruptly discontinued, a concern underscored by the recent deprecation of Anthropic’s Fable last month.

“How do I know that I’m not working with a company that is going to try to replace me and generalize to what I’m doing,” Katz pondered, articulating a common fear. He added, “All of these things are causing people to think, ‘How do I own my own enterprise intelligence and not have these risks’.”

Vincent Weisser, co-founder and CEO of Prime Intellect, firmly believes that enterprises are actively seeking to transition away from closed-source frontier models. He positions his company as providing the essential infrastructure to facilitate this critical shift.

“It shouldn’t just be a few nerds in a glass tower in San Francisco that have the capability to train AI models,” Weisser told TechCrunch, emphasizing his vision. “It should be every enterprise, every nation state.”
