Perplexity, an AI search startup, is introducing a new tool, "Personal Computer," positioning it as a more secure, Mac-compatible alternative to existing agent systems like OpenClaw.

Moving beyond its role as a mere answer engine, Perplexity unveiled "Personal Computer" on Wednesday. This innovative AI agent tool is designed to transform an unused Mac into a powerful, locally operated AI system, envisioned as "a digital proxy for you."

Perplexity states that Personal Computer will operate continuously, 24/7, on a dedicated device within a user's local network. It will possess comprehensive access to files and applications, with full control available from any location and device. This enhanced level of access allows for a more tailored experience compared to its predecessor, Perplexity Computer—a cluster of agents launched last month and described as a "general-purpose digital worker."

The company emphasizes Personal Computer's superior security features over other agent systems, including OpenClaw. It provides users with a "full audit trail," the capability to reverse actions, and the option to approve sensitive operations prior to execution. A "kill switch" is also integrated, offering a critical safeguard should the system operate autonomously or erratically.

While Personal Computer is not yet publicly available, Perplexity has announced that prospective users must join a waitlist for early access. A launch date for the service has not yet been disclosed.

Consistent with Perplexity Computer, Personal Computer is primarily geared towards professional applications, aligning with the company's strategic focus on specialized tools. A video demonstration illustrates its use as a virtual assistant, where users can input prompts via typing or voice to automate tasks such as drafting investor emails, converting reports into slide decks, and evaluating job candidates.

Despite its professional orientation, Personal Computer also suggests significant consumer appeal, particularly given its compatibility with consumer-grade hardware. Perplexity confirms the software will run on a Mac Mini, a favored device among AI agent enthusiasts, though support for other hardware and platforms remains unspecified.

In an extensive post on X, CEO Aravind Srinivas articulated an ambitious vision, suggesting the product could empower individuals to establish billion-dollar companies by mitigating humanity's "single biggest disadvantage": the need for sleep. He asserted, "It never sleeps. It’s personal and more powerful than any AI system ever launched."
