Perplexity has announced the general availability of its Personal Computer, a desktop application designed to compete with local AI agents like OpenClaw, for all Mac users as of Thursday.
This new offering builds upon Perplexity's existing general-purpose, multi-model digital worker, "Perplexity Computer." The "Personal Computer" variant specifically extends these advanced AI capabilities directly to the user's device. It empowers AI agents to access local files, applications, connectors, and the web, enabling them to manage complex, multi-step personal workflows efficiently.
As articulated by the company, Personal Computer aims to “take Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place,” emphasizing its on-device operational focus.
This initiative seeks to leverage the increasing demand for local AI agents, a trend notably popularized by OpenClaw, which automate tasks for users. However, contrasting with OpenClaw's reported security vulnerabilities stemming from elevated permissions, Personal Computer is positioned to provide users with a more secure AI-enabled computing environment.
Perplexity's Personal Computer made its initial debut last month, at which point access was restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers and required joining a waitlist. The company now confirms that the software is accessible to all Mac users without these prior limitations.
Upon its full release, the software offers comprehensive functionality, including interaction with local files, native Mac applications, and web-based operations. Furthermore, it can orchestrate various tools and files, utilize over 400 connectors, and integrate personal context, all facilitated within a secure development environment hosted on Perplexity’s servers.
When integrated with Perplexity’s AI-powered Comet web browser, the system gains the ability to operate web-based tools seamlessly, eliminating the necessity for direct connectors.
Optimized for deployment on always-on devices such as a Mac Mini, Personal Computer allows for remote access from an iPhone, enabling users to initiate tasks or approve requests directly from their mobile device.
Perplexity highlights the versatility of Personal Computer for a wide range of professional applications, including managing spreadsheets, documents, and intricate multi-material projects. Its cross-application functionality means agents can, for instance, compare files sourced from different applications or extract notes from one program to generate a draft in another.
With the general release of Personal Computer, Perplexity has indicated that its predecessor Mac application will be deprecated in the coming weeks, allowing the development team to concentrate entirely on the new Personal Computer app.
Currently, the new Mac application is exclusively available via direct download and is not listed in the Mac App Store.
