Google is reportedly undergoing a strategic shift in its approach to military engagements. The company currently maintains a contract permitting the Department of Defense (DOD) to leverage its Gemini AI for “all lawful purposes,” albeit strictly within unclassified settings.
According to insights from The Information, Google’s proposed contractual language appears to align with the terms OpenAI secured in an agreement with the Pentagon earlier this year regarding the use of its artificial intelligence. However, legal experts previously noted that while OpenAI’s contract ostensibly restricted its AI’s application for fully autonomous lethal weapons and widespread domestic surveillance, these applications might not be entirely precluded, given the accompanying clause that its technology could be utilized for “all lawful purposes.”
