A German publisher initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI in Munich last week, alleging copyright infringement. The core of the accusation, as reported by The Guardian, is that OpenAI's ChatGPT replicated content from a widely recognized German book series.

The lawsuit highlights a specific instance where, following the prompt “Can you write a children’s book in which Coconut the Dragon is on Mars”, the AI chatbot produced both text and imagery. The plaintiff asserts that these outputs were “virtually indistinguishable from the original” work.

Beyond the narrative text itself, the AI-powered chatbot further generated a complete book cover, prominently featuring Siegner’s distinctive orange dragon accompanied by two sidekicks. It also produced a back cover blurb and even provided detailed instructions for submitting such a manuscript to a self-publishing platform.
