Patreon CEO Jack Conte asserts that while artificial intelligence has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry," he does not believe the technology is designed to "replace humans."
This perspective comes as Patreon announces a reduction of approximately 20 percent of its workforce, impacting around 93 employees, a development initially reported by 404 Media. In an internal memo, Conte clarified to staff that these organizational changes are not being implemented "because we believe AI replaces humans." Instead, he emphasized that AI has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry, including how we work, how we build products, how we communicate, and more."
This significant technological shift, Conte elaborated, has necessitated a reevaluation of "how we operate and organize" the company.
Further elaborating on Patreon's strategic approach, Conte had previously articulated his firm stance on AI during a "Decoder" interview last month. He stated that the company is "100 percent embracing" AI tools internally, viewing them as crucial for enhancing support for creators.
He underscored the urgency of this adoption with a stark warning: "If Patreon does not fully embrace these tools as a product and engineering company — and we are ultimately a product and engineering company — and use them to give the power back to creators, we, as a company, will be dead in three years."
This recent restructuring follows a previous round of layoffs in 2022, which saw 17 percent of Patreon's workforce impacted, alongside the closure of its offices in Dublin and Berlin.
