On Tuesday, Otter.ai announced that it has successfully secured $320 million in funding from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund (CVF). This investment vehicle provides capital to startups without diluting owners' equity, aiming for returns based on the outcomes of marketing expenditures.

The company stated that it intends to utilize these funds to accelerate its enterprise growth, refine its go-to-market strategy, expand internationally, and drive product innovation.

According to PitchBook data, this nearly decade-old startup has previously raised a total of $50 million, with its most recent round occurring in 2021.

Last year, Otter achieved a significant revenue milestone by surpassing $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). While the company noted that it is now approaching new targets, it did not disclose specific updated figures.

The company reported that 40 million users have utilized its product to date, an increase from 25 million last year. However, given the saturated market for meeting note-taking software, retaining these users remains a key challenge for Otter. Unfortunately, the startup has not disclosed any metrics regarding its monthly active users or customer churn rates.

“Voice is one of the biggest untapped opportunities in enterprise AI, and Otter is at the forefront of this space,” said Pranav Singhvi, Partner and Co-founder of CVF at General Catalyst. “A conviction that has only deepened as I have watched Otter's growth,” he continued. “When Otter enables enterprises to capture critical voice data and transforms it into actionable business insights, teams move faster, decisions become sharper, and productivity compounds across the organization. That is why it is a strong partner for CVF.”

The market is highly competitive, featuring well-funded meeting notetakers such as Fireflies.ai, Granola, and Read AI, as well as new entrants like Calendly, Wispr, and Superhuman, which recently acquired Fathom. Additionally, other competitors include Circleback, Talat, and Quill.

Most of these notetakers aim to connect with enterprise systems and automate workflows based on meeting data capture. Otter is also moving in this direction. Over the last few years, it has introduced a meeting assistant, a search function that works across applications, and integrations with other AI tools.

Alex Gay, Otter's newly appointed Chief Marketing Officer who previously worked at Superhuman, shared at the HumanX conference last month that the company identifies a significant opportunity in converting transcripts into actionable roadmaps for professionals engaged in back-to-back meetings.

“When we analyze the major problems people face today, we identified a significant pain point in roles with heavy meeting loads, such as back-to-back conversations,” Gay explained. “For these individuals, meetings are the work itself—whether they are customer conversations or sales discussions where strategies are formed. However, meetings are highly inefficient because participants often spend the first twenty minutes recapping prior discussions just to get everyone up to speed,” he added.

Otter is currently experimenting with providing insights before, during, and after meetings. The company is testing a feature that sends a pre-brief to users containing details and background information, including context from previous conversations across various platforms. Furthermore, it is developing a Live Assist feature that allows users to query the AI assistant in real-time during meetings to retrieve knowledge.
