Peter Steinberger, the visionary behind the popular AI agent OpenClaw and now a valued member of the OpenAI team, offers crucial advice for individuals delving into AI technology, particularly AI agents. Drawing from his personal journey, Steinberger emphasizes that the most effective approach to innovation today involves extensive exploration, a playful mindset, and a willingness to embrace the learning curve without expecting immediate mastery.

“I wish I could say that I had the unified plan in the beginning, but a lot of it was just exploration,” Steinberger revealed. He elaborated, “I wanted things, and those things didn’t exist, and…let’s say, I prompted them into existence.”

Steinberger shared these insights during a conversation with OpenAI’s Head of Developer Experience, Romain Huet, on the inaugural episode of the company’s new Builders Unscripted podcast. During the discussion, he reflected on OpenClaw’s formative stages and the spontaneous nature of its inception.

He recounted how his initial venture involved developing a tool for WhatsApp integration. However, he temporarily shelved this project, anticipating that leading AI research labs would soon develop similar solutions.

“I just experimented a lot. My mission was, kind of like, to have fun and inspire people,” Steinberger noted. Yet, by November of the previous year, he was surprised to find that no AI labs had created the kind of tool he envisioned. This realization spurred him to develop the foundational prototype that would evolve into OpenClaw.

“Where it really clicked was where I was at this weekend trip in Marrakesh, and I found myself using it way more because it was so convenient…there was no really good internet. [But] WhatsApp just works everywhere,” he explained. The utility of his tool became evident, simplifying tasks such as discovering restaurants, conducting online searches, and sending messages to friends.

Through continued experimentation with the technology, Steinberger recognized the remarkable problem-solving capabilities of contemporary AI models, drawing parallels to the cognitive processes of human programmers.

“Now they can just, like, actually come up with the solutions themselves, even though you never programmed them at all,” he observed, highlighting the autonomous nature of modern AI solutions.

Steinberger also shared that his development workflow significantly improved over time. He advises fellow developers that such refinement is an ongoing process that demands patience and persistence.

“There’s these people that…write software in the old way, and the old way is going to go away,” he asserted. He noted that many attempt what is termed "vibe coding" but often encounter disappointing outcomes.

“I think vibe-coding is a slur,” Steinberger stated, implying that the initial process is more complex than the casual term suggests. “They try AI, but they don’t understand that it’s a skill,” he added, drawing an analogy to mastering a musical instrument like the guitar.

“You’re not going to be good at guitar on the first day,” he elaborated. Instead, he advocates for a playful and experimental approach to learning. He described how he now instinctively gauges the effort required for a prompt, and if results are delayed, he meticulously analyzes potential issues and adjusts his strategy.

“My… advice always is, approach it in a playful way. Build something that you always wanted to build. If you’re at least a little bit of a builder, there has to be something on the back of your mind that you want to build. Like, just play.”

This capacity for experimentation and enjoyment is paramount, especially in an era where concerns about AI-driven job displacement are prevalent.

“If your identity is: I want to create things. I want to solve problems. If you’re a high agency, if you’re smart, you will be in more demand than ever,” Steinberger concluded, offering an optimistic outlook for proactive and innovative individuals.
