For those who have wished for a faster response time from AI models, OpenAI appears to be delivering a solution.
The prominent AI research firm has unveiled a new "Ultrafast" mode, specifically engineered to dramatically enhance the processing speed of its most advanced model, GPT 5.6 Sol.
According to the company, Ultrafast operates at an impressive 14 times the speed of conventional processing, capable of generating up to 750 output tokens per second. These tokens are defined as the discrete textual elements produced by a large language model during interaction.
In a blog post released on Thursday, OpenAI stated, "Until now, getting real-time speed typically meant choosing a smaller or more specialized model." The company emphasized that "Ultrafast points to progress in a new direction: more useful work per second," highlighting a shift in achieving both speed and utility.
While competitors such as Anthropic have also introduced accelerated versions of their models, like Claude's "fast mode," these offerings do not match the significant speed advancements presented by OpenAI.
OpenAI envisions this high-performance iteration of GPT 5.6 Sol being integrated into various corporate workflows, particularly in critical areas such as incident response, customer service and support, financial market analysis, and e-commerce, among other applicable sectors.
Currently in a preview release, Ultrafast is made possible through OpenAI's strategic partnership with chipmaker Cerebras. Access to this preview is presently restricted to a select group of customers, with OpenAI affirming plans to broaden availability of the feature as "capacity grows."
