OpenAI is undergoing significant leadership transitions with the departures of Bill Peebles, who led the Sora video generation team, and Kevin Weil, the company's Vice President of AI for Science.

Peebles’ exit, announced on Friday, comes in the wake of OpenAI’s decision last month to discontinue its Sora video generation tool. This move is part of a broader strategic initiative by OpenAI to streamline its priorities and avoid what it refers to as "side quests." The company is increasingly directing its focus towards core areas such as coding and enterprise applications, positioning Peebles' departure as one of several recent organizational adjustments in this strategic realignment.

In a message posted on X, Peebles conveyed his immense gratitude to Sam Altman, Mark Chen, Aditya Ramesh, and Jakub Pachocki. He credited them with fostering a research environment that allowed for the exploration of ideas "off-the-beaten path" from the company’s primary roadmap. Peebles underscored his conviction that "cultivating entropy is the only way for a research lab to thrive long-term, and Sam deeply understands this," further remarking that Sora was a project uniquely achievable at OpenAI, for which he will "always deeply love this place."

Concurrently, Kevin Weil, who held the position of VP of AI for Science and previously served as the company’s chief product officer, also confirmed his departure, with Friday being his final day. Weil indicated in an X post that his team is "being decentralized into other research teams." Furthermore, OpenAI is discontinuing Prism, a recently introduced research-focused "workspace for scientists" that Weil was leading. Wired reports that the capabilities of Prism are planned to be integrated into the Codex desktop application.
