OpenAI has unveiled its latest conversational AI models, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, which promise a more natural sound and superior turn-taking capabilities. These are full-duplex models, enabling simultaneous speaking and listening, thereby facilitating natural interruptions and advanced features such as live translation.

The GPT-Live-1 mini model will now serve as the default for ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, replacing the previous iteration. Users subscribed to paid tiers will gain access to the more powerful GPT-Live-1 model. The prior architecture relied on a combination of a speech-to-text model for transcription, a large language model for response generation, and a text-to-speech model for audio delivery.

During a recent press briefing, OpenAI stated that the new models effectively resolve common issues like accidentally interrupting users mid-sentence and lacking sufficient intelligence to answer complex inquiries. The company's innovative approach involves routing user queries to its most advanced text models, such as GPT-5.5, for intensive tasks like search, reasoning, or agentic capabilities, all while maintaining an uninterrupted conversational flow.

Furthermore, OpenAI demonstrated the model's capacity to maintain silence and assimilate conversational context over extended periods until prompted. A significant enhancement is the new voice mode's ability to present information visually, leveraging access to newer GPT models. This aligns with a broader industry trend, as other startups like Monogram, which secured $40 million in seed funding from DST and Lux Capital, are also exploring visual responses to enhance assistant interactivity.

The new voice mode in ChatGPT is specifically engineered to support longer, more sustained conversations. Atty Eleti, ChatGPT Voice’s product lead, shared during the briefing that he has engaged in conversations lasting between 30 and 40 minutes with the voice feature during his walks, highlighting its endurance.

OpenAI envisions voice becoming the primary interface for complex computing tasks. While reports have circulated about a potential launch of AI-powered earbuds later this year, the company refrained from providing any details regarding hardware products.

"Over time, we think this will also unlock the ability to use voice as a kind of primary interface to computing, and to manage increasingly complex long-running agentic work. The kind of amazing use cases that we see people using Codex and ChatGPT to accomplish, we think voice can be the future interface to all kinds of work," Eleti articulated, emphasizing the transformative potential of voice interaction.

OpenAI has dedicated considerable effort over the past few years to refine its voice-based features, striving for a more natural sound in ChatGPT’s voice mode. The company reports that over 150 million individuals currently interact with ChatGPT using its Voice and Dictation functionalities.

Competitors are also actively working to make their AI assistants more expressive and sophisticated.

Both Apple and Amazon have rolled out updates to their respective assistants, enhancing their conversational abilities and context handling. Similarly, startups such as Sesame, co-founded by Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe and Ankit Kumar, have introduced AI assistants capable of more natural conversations while executing tasks seamlessly in the background.

Despite these advancements, the new voice mode still presents areas for improvement. During a live demo of its Hindi translation feature, the assistant exhibited a pronounced American accent and delivered Hindi speech that sounded unnatural and somewhat formal. OpenAI stated that the new mode is optimized for "most spoken languages" but did not specify which languages fall under this optimization.
