Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-serving executives, has announced his departure from the influential artificial intelligence research lab, stating his intention to "start something new."

In an internal message, which Lightcap subsequently shared publicly on Tuesday, the outgoing executive informed OpenAI staff that it was "bittersweet to share that I’ll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new."

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and initially served for four years as the company's chief financial officer. He then transitioned to chief operating officer in 2022, a role he held until earlier this year. Amidst a broader reorganization of executive positions, he most recently led special projects for the company. Prior to his tenure at OpenAI, Lightcap also collaborated with CEO Sam Altman at the venture capital firm Y-Combinator.

Reflecting on his journey, Lightcap stated in his message, "I had the privilege of building the first versions of most of our operations and business teams – from Finance to Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, Partnerships, and more." He added, "Among the most rewarding parts of this journey for me has been watching each of these teams mature under brilliant leaders."

In his communication, Lightcap also offered a glimpse into his future endeavors, hinting at an upcoming venture without providing specific details regarding its nature.

"Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success," Lightcap elaborated. He continued, "I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. I’ll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point."

Lightcap's exit occurs as OpenAI prepares for a potentially industry-defining IPO and undergoes significant shifts within its top-tier executive team. In July, Fidji Simo, the company's No. 2 executive who oversaw AGI development, also announced her departure. Other notable executives who have recently left the firm include Bill Peebles, who formerly led the now-discontinued video generator Sora, and Kevin Weil, the vice president of the company's Science vertical.
