OpenAI is reportedly targeting a 2027 launch for its inaugural major hardware device, a significant step into the physical product market.

According to a Bloomberg report, this initial offering is envisioned as a smart speaker designed for interactive conversations with ChatGPT. Notably, the device is expected to forgo a traditional screen, instead integrating a camera and various sensors to "understand" its surrounding environment.

This revelation emerges merely days after Apple initiated legal action against OpenAI, alleging the AI firm of misappropriating hardware trade secrets. In response, OpenAI issued a statement on Tuesday, asserting that it is "not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit."

Sources cited by Bloomberg indicate the device will incorporate a rechargeable battery, facilitating portability for users. Its functionalities are anticipated to include smart home management, media playback, answering queries, and message responses. Furthermore, Bloomberg states that the gadget will leverage GPT-Live, OpenAI’s recently unveiled upgraded voice model.

Bloomberg further details that the device will utilize “mechanical elements that can move on their own” to foster a “humanlike level of connection with users.” This aligns with a February report from The Information, which described a comparable device featuring a camera capable of recognizing nearby objects or individuals.

The projected 2027 launch of this speaker is reportedly part of OpenAI's broader strategy for an expanded hardware portfolio, which Bloomberg suggests currently encompasses "roughly" five distinct devices. OpenAI's foray into this new product line involves a collaboration with renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive, a partnership forged after the company's acquisition of his design firm, io Products, for nearly $6.5 billion.

OpenAI has not yet provided an immediate response to requests for comment regarding these developments. Separately, the company has also been promoting a different gadget, the Codex Micro, developed in collaboration with Work Louder, which is slated for release on July 15th.
