OpenAI has announced the elimination of text-based chat restrictions for all ChatGPT users, a platform that recently surpassed one billion weekly users.

This enhanced experience will be driven by the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which is set to become the default for Free and Go tier users, superseding the GPT-5.5 version.

Additionally, Free and Go users will gain access to a novel “Think” button, enabling them to activate superior reasoning capabilities for tackling intricate queries. OpenAI clarified that distinct usage limits will persist for functionalities involving files, images, voice interactions, and image generation.

The update also introduces significant enhancements for Plus and Pro subscribers. These premium users will now benefit from an advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model, optimized for rapid tasks including answering questions, conducting web research, offering advice, planning, writing, and facilitating decision-making. OpenAI highlighted that this new iteration delivers more concise and powerful responses. (It's important to note that this is a distinct version from the GPT-5.6 Sol model utilized for Codex and Work, which remains unaffected.)

Furthermore, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will receive a "thinking slider," allowing them to precisely control the computational effort the model dedicates to formulating an answer. This slider can be adjusted according to the complexity and the number of steps required to resolve a particular query.

An internal evaluation conducted by OpenAI revealed a substantial reduction in factual errors compared to the GPT-5.5-Instant model, with GPT-5.6 Luna exhibiting 62% fewer errors and GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrating an impressive 68% reduction.

The enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol version is immediately accessible to Plus and Pro users, while the remaining updates for Free and Go users are scheduled for deployment this week. By next week, all users will fully benefit from unlimited text chats and the innovative “Think” button, designed to assist with more challenging questions.
