OpenAI is reportedly preparing its inaugural hardware product: a smart speaker equipped with a camera, expected to retail for between $200 and $300, according to The Information. This sophisticated device will possess advanced recognition capabilities, including the ability to identify "items on a nearby table or conversations people are having in the vicinity," as reported by The Information. Furthermore, it is slated to feature a facial recognition system, akin to Apple's Face ID, to facilitate secure purchases.

This strategic move follows OpenAI's significant acquisition of Jony Ive’s hardware company last May, a deal valued at nearly $6.5 billion. Details regarding their hardware endeavors have since emerged, indicating that the first device will not be a wearable and is not anticipated to be released to consumers earlier than March 2027. The broader technology landscape is also witnessing a substantial push into AI-powered gadgets by other industry giants, including Apple – Ive’s former employer – which is reportedly developing its own smart glasses, an AI-enabled pendant, and AirPods integrated with cameras.

In addition to the smart speaker, The Information suggests OpenAI is "possibly" exploring the development of smart glasses and a smart lamp – an area where Apple is also reportedly innovating. However, mass production for OpenAI’s smart glasses is not expected until 2028. While prototypes for devices like the smart lamp have been created, The Information notes that their eventual release remains "unclear," emphasizing that OpenAI's overall device plans are still in their early stages.
