New details continue to surface regarding OpenAI’s enigmatic hardware device, previously characterized as an AI-powered smart speaker intended to serve as the "physical manifestation" of ChatGPT.
Bloomberg now reports that the device will feature a distinctive “donut-shaped” design. This form factor is specifically engineered to allow users to conveniently carry it throughout their homes and position it in various locations, such as a bedside table or a kitchen counter.
Sources speaking to Bloomberg indicated that the device will be constructed from “high-quality metal,” projecting a “premium look.” Intriguingly, it will also incorporate distinct “moving parts,” a detail that has added to its mystique.
According to the report, this device could command a higher price point than the average smart speaker, potentially ranging from $300 to $400 per unit. For context, most of Amazon’s smart home speakers typically span from $40 at the lower end to $240 at the higher end.
In essence, we are looking at a potentially expensive, AI-powered "talking donut" with "moving parts." While OpenAI's move into smart home hardware logically aims to further integrate ChatGPT into users' daily lives, the smart speaker market has historically struggled with profitability and can be challenging to penetrate. The projected high price point may also present an obstacle.
The device, developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by the renowned former Apple developer Jony Ive, is expected to be released sometime in 2027, as reported by Bloomberg.
OpenAI’s ambitious entry into the hardware market has not been entirely smooth. The company is currently facing a lawsuit from Apple, a dominant player in hardware, which has accused the AI lab of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has, however, denied any wrongdoing.
