OpenAI Readies GPT-5 Launch with Advanced Reasoning in August
OpenAI plans to release GPT-5 in early August, integrating advanced reasoning features and multiple model versions for ChatGPT and API users.

Originally reported bytheverge
OpenAI is preparing to release its next-generation GPT-5 model in early August, following months of testing and infrastructure scaling by Microsoft engineers. CEO Sam Altman confirmed the upcoming launch, describing GPT-5 as a “here it is moment” after successfully using it to solve complex problems instantly during a podcast appearance.
GPT-5 will integrate OpenAI’s o3 reasoning technology, eliminating the need for separate reasoning models and offering mini and nano versions alongside the main model. These will be available through both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API, with the nano version exclusively offered via the API. Altman emphasized GPT-5 as a step toward unified AI capabilities that could eventually support artificial general intelligence (AGI).
While GPT-5 is expected to be significantly more advanced, OpenAI has stated it will not meet AGI benchmarks at launch, with “gold level” capabilities still months away. Ahead of the GPT-5 debut, OpenAI also plans to release an open-weight language model similar to o3 mini, its first open model release since GPT-2 in 2019, available on Azure, Hugging Face, and other cloud providers.
The GPT-5 launch coincides with major developments in Microsoft’s ecosystem, including security challenges related to a critical SharePoint vulnerability and new AI features for Windows 11. Microsoft, a key OpenAI partner, continues to expand infrastructure to support these AI advancements while addressing cybersecurity and operational concerns.
GPT-5’s release marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI as it consolidates its AI model lineup, strengthens reasoning capabilities, and navigates evolving regulatory and partnership dynamics with Microsoft, all while pushing closer toward its long-term AGI goals.
