The ChatGPT desktop application can be difficult to navigate due to the separation between ChatGPT and Codex sections, as well as the distinct Chat and Work tabs within the former. This complexity often makes it challenging to remember your current context or the specific status of your project.

To resolve this usability issue, OpenAI plans to unify the Chat and Work tabs within the ChatGPT interface, as indicated by an email sent to users. The company stated that this integrated experience will first be trialed by a select group of users to gather feedback before a wider release.

This transition allows you to move seamlessly from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT fully execute it within a single interface. You can integrate your files and plugins to command ChatGPT to build a website, create presentations, or perform online tasks, while simultaneously monitoring and directing its progress. Please note that Codex will continue to operate as a distinct feature in the desktop app, as the company explained in the email.

Additionally, OpenAI revealed that the transition will consolidate the token allowance pools for both ChatGPT and Codex. While this modification will not affect the majority of users, specific individuals might experience more frequent resets based on their specific usage patterns and model selection.

This move follows a similar integration by rival Anthropic, which combined Claude's chat and Cowork functions into a single screen in September.
