OpenAI has reportedly secured $11 billion in a fresh funding round, elevating the AI lab’s valuation to $1.25 trillion.
Bloomberg broke the news on Friday, citing sources familiar with the arrangement. This $11 billion represents a portion of a larger round that is not yet finalized, the outlet noted. Sources indicate the round may conclude within weeks, potentially reaching a total of $20 billion.
Previously, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI aimed to raise $30 billion in this cycle. The current figures fall short of that initial target.
TechCrunch has contacted OpenAI for a statement and will update this report accordingly.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Bloomberg’s reporting on Anthropic, OpenAI's chief rival. Bloomberg stated that potential buyers of shares in Anthropic's IPO are valuing the company significantly lower than anticipated. Some investors believe Anthropic’s valuation could drop to as low as $1.1 trillion, compared to the $2 trillion expected just a month ago.
Although OpenAI initially suggested an IPO would occur this year, the company has since pushed back those plans. Analysts now expect the IPO to take place sometime next year.
The AI market is currently experiencing heightened volatility. The recent Democratic landslide in the U.S. midterms, combined with negative voter sentiment regarding data centers, has caused uncertainty. Market watchers are increasingly anticipating potential regulatory hurdles on the horizon.
