OpenAI is set to discontinue Sora, its highly anticipated video generation tool, despite considerable industry buzz and a significant partnership with Disney.
On Tuesday afternoon, OpenAI officially announced its decision, stating, "We’re saying goodbye to Sora." This move comes just months after the tool, which was introduced earlier this year, became the cornerstone of a major licensing deal with Disney. The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported on this development, indicating that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had informed staff that both the TikTok-like Sora application and its API access for developers would be phased out. Furthermore, contrary to previous rumors, there are no plans to integrate Sora's features into ChatGPT.
As a direct consequence, the substantial agreement Disney unveiled in December will also come to an end, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That deal involved Disney's commitment to invest $1 billion in OpenAI, license its renowned characters for use within Sora, and stream AI-generated videos on Disney Plus.
The Sora Team conveyed their gratitude and acknowledged the community's disappointment, stating: "We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."
