OpenAI is commencing the rollout of advertisements within ChatGPT today, according to a report from CNBC. These ads will be displayed in a distinct section positioned below the main chat interface.

This initiative marks OpenAI's official launch of ad testing in its AI chatbot, a move first announced last month. The company has assured users that these "clearly labeled" advertisements will be confined to an area separate from the primary chat window.

Internally, OpenAI anticipates that advertising revenue will constitute "less than half of its revenue long term," a detail shared by a source close to the matter with CNBC. This development follows a recent Super Bowl commercial by rival Anthropic, which playfully critiqued OpenAI by stating "ads are coming to AI," though not to its own chatbot, Claude. The version of Anthropic's ad broadcast during the game was notably toned down after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly labeled the initial campaign "clearly dishonest."

These advertisements will target logged-in users, encompassing both those utilizing the free version of the app and subscribers to the more affordable Go plan. OpenAI has committed to "keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers," while clarifying that the ads themselves will be "optimized based on what’s most helpful to you." Furthermore, OpenAI asserts that advertisers will have no influence over ChatGPT's generated responses.

Concurrently, an internal memo obtained by CNBC reveals that Altman informed employees of plans to unveil an updated chat model this week. This follows closely on the heels of the company's release of a more advanced iteration of its AI coding agent, Codex. Altman also reportedly highlighted that ChatGPT is "back to exceeding 10% monthly growth," building on its reported 800 million weekly users last October.
