OpenAI Removes Jony Ive Promotion Due to Court Ruling
Originally reported bytechcrunch
OpenAI has removed a popular promotional video featuring CEO Sam Altman and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive from its website and YouTube channel. The removal comes after a court order related to a trademark dispute with the startup iYO, which was involved in the deal with OpenAI.  Despite the footage’s pull, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirmed that the deal between OpenAI and iyO remains on track and has not been canceled. Gurman explained that the restraining order only applies to the use of the name “io,” leading to the temporary removal of related promotional materials. OpenAI issued an update stating that the page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about their use of the name. The company emphasized that they do not agree with the complaint and are examining their options, but clarified that this legal issue does not impact their ongoing agreement with iyO. The startup iyO originated from Google’s parent company Alphabet X, known for its ambitious projects. Its first product is a set of AI-powered earbuds that utilize generative AI technology. Bloomberg Law reported that iyO has filed a trademark lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the promotional video might cause confusion among consumers. The presiding judge indicated they are inclined to accept iyO’s argument, suggesting that the video could potentially mislead the public about the relationship between the two companies. Despite this legal hurdle, sources indicate that the planned acquisition and collaboration between OpenAI and iyO are still progressing as scheduled. This situation highlights how legal disputes over trademarks can temporarily impact marketing efforts even when business deals remain intact. OpenAI is closely reviewing its options while working to resolve the issue, reaffirming its commitment to the partnership with iyO moving forward. The incident underscores the importance of brand clarity in high-profile collaborations, especially involving influential figures and innovative technology startups.
