OpenAI has announced a further postponement in the release of its "adult mode" for ChatGPT, a feature intended to grant verified adult users access to erotica and various other forms of mature content.
The introduction of this capability was initially revealed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in October. At the time, Altman stated, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
This marks the second delay for the feature, which was originally slated for a December launch. That initial postponement occurred after Altman reportedly issued an internal "code red" memo, redirecting teams to prioritize enhancements to the core ChatGPT experience, pushing the release into the first quarter of the current year.
An OpenAI spokesperson has since informed Axios that the company is "pushing out the launch of adult mode" once again. The rationale provided is to "focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now," encompassing improvements to the chatbot's intelligence, personality, and its capacity to be "more proactive."
Reaffirming the company's stance, the spokesperson added, “We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time.”
The duration of this latest delay remains unspecified. The initial report regarding this development was provided by Sources.
