OpenAI has introduced a new College Planner tool designed to assist users in managing application and financial aid deadlines.
This update extends to ChatGPT for Teens, a mode launched in August featuring safeguards and break reminders specifically to aid students through the college application process.
OpenAI describes the College Planner as a feature that consolidates application requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial-aid steps for schools on a student's list into a single plan.
The statement continues, "Students applying to several colleges can return to it to update their progress, use the timeline to plan ahead and see what’s left to do. They can also ask ChatGPT questions along the way, from what a requirement means to how to get started."
The new College Planner feature is expected to launch "soon," with OpenAI noting that in the US, it will initially target students in grades 10 through 12 planning to attend a four-year college.
Additionally, OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT's study capabilities. Users on iOS can now utilize a continuous, multi-photo capture to upload multiple images at once and convert them into a single PDF. Furthermore, the AI will be capable of generating flashcards based on user notes.
These updates arrive shortly after Common Sense Media published a report classifying ChatGPT for Teens as an "unacceptable risk," criticizing the tool for "still does kids’ homework" and noting its failure to alert parents when appropriate. OpenAI responded in today's announcement, claiming that on average, teens spend "under 15 minutes a day" using ChatGPT.
