OpenAI launches Codex macOS app to manage multiple agents
Originally reported byopenai

OpenAI has introduced the Codex app for macOS, a new desktop interface built to help developers run and supervise multiple AI agents at the same time while working on long tasks. The company says the app is designed for a shift in how software is built, moving from single-agent assistance on small edits to coordinated groups of agents that can support the full process of designing, building, shipping, and maintaining software.

OpenAI said Codex will be included for a limited time with ChatGPT Free and Go, while rate limits are being doubled for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and other paid plans. These higher limits apply anywhere Codex is used, including the app, command line tools, IDE extensions, and cloud workflows.

The Codex app organizes agent work into separate threads by project, allowing users to switch between tasks without losing context. Developers can review changes inside each thread, comment on code differences, and open updates in an editor for manual adjustments. The app also supports worktrees so multiple agents can work on the same repository without conflicts, with each agent using an isolated copy of the code. Users can pull changes locally when ready, or let agents continue without affecting their local git setup. OpenAI added that the app can carry over session history and settings from the Codex CLI and IDE extension.

A major focus is “Skills,” which bundle instructions, resources, and scripts so Codex can reliably use tools and follow workflows. The app includes a dedicated space to create and manage these Skills, and they can be used across the desktop app, CLI, and IDE. OpenAI also highlighted internal and community Skills for tasks such as turning design assets into UI code, managing work in Linear, deploying to cloud hosts, generating images, building with OpenAI APIs, and creating documents.

The app also supports scheduled Automations that run tasks and place results in a review queue. OpenAI said it uses Automations internally for routine work like issue triage, summarizing failures, and producing release briefs. Developers can also choose between two interaction styles, a direct, execution-focused option and a more conversational one, using a command in the app and other Codex surfaces.

OpenAI said the macOS app is available now for eligible subscribers, with usage included in subscriptions and optional extra credits. The company plans to expand to Windows, improve multi-agent workflows, and add cloud-triggered Automations that can run even when a computer is not open.
