ChatGPT is expanding its revenue streams by integrating visual display advertisements directly into its image generation feature. Alongside this rollout, the company is enhancing its advertising measurement infrastructure and forging new partnerships to better assess brand safety and suitability.
Users in the United States will begin seeing these advertisements later this month. The ads, which feature products from an initial group of advertisers, will be distinctly labeled and will not alter the accuracy of ChatGPT's responses.
This strategic shift comes as Meta introduces its own agentic AI app, Muse, positioning it as a free alternative to leading chatbots like ChatGPT.
OpenAI originally introduced advertising earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription models, subsequently expanding the service to the Indian market in August.
The primary objective is to attract advertisers who wish to leverage the platform's visual capabilities, aiming to reach ChatGPT’s massive base of 1.2 billion weekly users once the rollout goes global.
While the inclusion of ads may disrupt the user experience, OpenAI appears to anticipate this, suggesting the ads might incentivize casual users to upgrade to a paid subscription to bypass them.
In addition to display ads, OpenAI is broadening its measurement toolkit and ecosystem. This expanded network now includes attribution solutions and ad-tech platforms such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin, alongside full-funnel measurement partners like Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL.
The company has also collaborated with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to assist advertisers in conducting "geo-based" advertising experiments.
To ensure a safe environment, OpenAI is developing brand suitability evaluation pilots in collaboration with DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS), helping brands evaluate the ChatGPT ecosystem.
Collectively, these initiatives are designed to establish ChatGPT as a sustainable, ad-supported business for users on free and low-cost plans.
