At OpenAI’s Dev Day event on Tuesday, the company unveiled Dots, a new personal agentic assistant powered by the GPT-6 Astra model. The company characterizes Dots as “remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything.”
Distinct from Codex or ChatGPT, Dots are designed to function independently of specific hardware or interfaces, continuously pursuing user-defined goals in the background with minimal supervision.
“Today, you can start with your primary dot, give it a name, and make it your own,” OpenAI stated in an announcement post. “Over time, we envision teams of Dots working together on your behalf.”
Dots will be available starting Tuesday within ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, accessible via the Codex or ChatGPT interfaces.
In its announcement, OpenAI outlined various potential use cases. For instance, a software developer might deploy a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback and implement necessary bug fixes or features. Alternatively, a scientist could employ a dot to rerun analyses and investigate unexpected results as new data arrives.
Users can interact with Dots through Slack, Teams, and other organizational platforms, with text message support expected soon.
OpenAI also foresees the creation of “specialist Dots” that assume specific responsibilities. These individual dots can be provisioned with distinct identities, credentials, and tools via existing systems. The company is already collaborating with Microsoft to integrate Dots into the Microsoft Agent 365 security controls.
Much of this functionality was previously achievable through Codex and similar agentic frameworks; however, Dots packages these capabilities into a new bundle with a primary focus on independent agentic actions.
The branding features a bubbly, cartoonish aesthetic, drawing a parallel to Meta’s recent Muse agent. The Dots appear as simple, floating cartoons, representing a visual makeover for OpenAI’s software and illustrating the company’s efforts to make artificial intelligence more relatable to users.
