OpenAI has reportedly forged a strategic agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to market its artificial intelligence offerings to the U.S. government, encompassing both classified and unclassified operations, according to reports from The Information.
This new collaboration follows OpenAI's prior success in securing a contract with the Pentagon, enabling the military to deploy its AI models within its secure, classified network. This earlier achievement occurred amidst a period of tension between rival AI firm Anthropic and the Department of Defense. Anthropic was subsequently designated a supply chain risk by the DOD due to its refusal to compromise on the potential use of its technology for mass surveillance of American citizens and for powering fully autonomous weapons. Anthropic has since initiated legal action against the Pentagon in response.
The deal between OpenAI and AWS is particularly significant as it positions the AI powerhouse directly within Anthropic's established sphere of influence. Amazon has invested more than $4 billion in Anthropic, and as a result, Anthropic utilizes AWS as its primary cloud service provider. Anthropic's Claude models are deeply integrated into Amazon Bedrock, AWS's AI platform tailored for enterprise and government clients, and Claude stands out as one of the most thoroughly embedded frontier models within AWS GovCloud for public sector applications.
Furthermore, this partnership considerably broadens OpenAI's reach within the federal sector, extending its presence well beyond its initial Pentagon agreement. It strategically positions the company to cater to a diverse array of government agencies by leveraging AWS’s extensive and pre-existing cloud infrastructure. AWS, a prominent cloud provider to various U.S. government entities, has committed to distributing OpenAI's products across its public-sector client base, as reported by The Information, citing individuals familiar with the matter.
The implications of this agreement could also extend to unlocking a greater number of enterprise contracts, given that government contracts are frequently perceived by corporations as a strong indicator of trust and operational reliability.
Neither OpenAI nor Amazon Web Services provided an immediate response to TechCrunch’s inquiries for comment.
