OpenAI is projecting a major leap in revenue, forecasting $125 billion by 2029 and $174 billion by 2030, as it expands its product lineup beyond ChatGPT. The ambitious projections were shared with investors, according to a report by The Information, and highlight the companyโs confidence in new AI-driven products, including advanced agents that could surpass the chatbotโs current earnings.
While OpenAI has not detailed what these new offerings will include, internal discussions reportedly involve monetizing through advertising or affiliate partnershipsโearning a share from purchases initiated via ChatGPT or its future AI agents.
OpenAI has experienced rapid revenue growth, closing 2024 with $3.7 billionโnearly quadrupling its income from the previous year. To support its scale-up, the company expects to spend $46 billion in cash over the next four years. It anticipates turning cash flow positive by 2029, with around $2 billion in free cash expected that year.
Recent announcements indicate that OpenAIโs next-generation models, including the o3 and o4-mini reasoning systems, will play a central role in this growth. Described as the most advanced models to date, they mark a significant step toward building autonomous AI agents capable of independently completing complex tasks for users.
At a recent event, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar emphasized that the company is transitioning from just developing AI models to becoming a comprehensive provider of AI infrastructure and applications. One of OpenAIโs most ambitious goals includes creating an AI agent capable of handling the full range of software engineering tasks, not just assisting engineers but potentially replacing much of their workload.
CEO Sam Altman also highlighted the platformโs widespread reach, stating that about 800 million peopleโroughly 10% of the global populationโare now using OpenAIโs technologies.
