The Sol and Luna series were originally introduced earlier this year, serving distinct roles within OpenAI's model hierarchy. Sol is optimized for complex tasks such as coding, while Luna is designed for clerical work involving high-volume, goal-oriented activities like document summarization, information extraction, and answering quick queries.
A key focus of this release is significant improvements in efficiency and affordability. OpenAI has implemented a substantial price drop for API access, with the 6-series models priced at half the cost of the previous 5.6 series. This reduction is attributed to technological advancements in caching and inference.
OpenAI asserts that these new models offer superior factual accuracy and a reduced error rate, particularly in coding tasks. According to the company, on internal factuality evaluations based on real-world flagged mistakes, GPT-6 Sol produces roughly half the errors of its predecessor while achieving reliability comparable to the Astra model at a lower cost.

The company claims GPT-6 Sol and Luna perform tasks better than Anthropic's Fable and Opus models. The updated Sol and Luna models are now accessible in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts, as well as through the ChatGPT API.
