OpenAI Releases Updated Model Spec to Refine AI Ethics and Responses
Originally reported bytheverge
OpenAI has introduced an expanded version of its Model Spec, a document that outlines how AI should behave, growing from 10 to 63 pages. The new guidelines emphasize transparency, customization, and intellectual freedom, ensuring that AI can engage in discussions while maintaining ethical standards.  The update includes responses to controversial questions, allowing AI to provide well-reasoned answers rather than avoiding complex topics. The changes also explore handling adult content, allowing some mature discussions while strictly banning harmful material. CEO Sam Altman recently announced that GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion, is set to launch soon, aligning with the company’s evolving AI ethics framework. OpenAI has updated its stance on sensitive topics, including how AI should address misinformation, political debates, and ethical dilemmas like the trolley problem.  The revised Model Spec also focuses on reducing AI sycophancy, ensuring models do not simply agree with users but provide honest feedback and constructive criticism. A significant shift is OpenAI’s willingness to make these guidelines publicly available under a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. This move allows researchers and AI companies to adopt and modify the specifications freely.  OpenAI hopes that by releasing these guidelines, it can spark industry-wide conversations on AI behavior and safety. The company also plans to gather public feedback, believing that an open discussion will improve AI’s ability to handle sensitive queries. While these updates won’t immediately change ChatGPT’s behavior, they mark a step toward AI models that balance user freedom with responsible responses. The company has also structured a hierarchy for AI behavior, prioritizing OpenAI’s platform rules, followed by developer guidelines and user preferences.  This development comes at a time when AI’s role in ethical discussions is under intense scrutiny. OpenAI remains committed to refining its models based on ongoing feedback and evolving societal norms.
