OpenAI is extending its reach into productivity software through ChatGPT's new Pages, Slides, and Space features, moving beyond standard productivity tools to integrate with any application that benefits from ChatGPT's capabilities.
During the company's Dev Day presentation on Tuesday, OpenAI revealed that developers can now construct app-like experiences directly within ChatGPT using new plugin extensions.
While OpenAI currently supports plugins that link ChatGPT to daily tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Airtable, and Google Drive, these new extensions will provide applications with a dedicated location within the ChatGPT sidebar.
Developers will also have the ability to create interactive panels that allow users to interact with their tools while conversing with ChatGPT. This functionality includes file viewers that support the specific file formats utilized by the developer’s product.
Furthermore, OpenAI has streamlined the plugin development process and improved discovery for end users by introducing a Plugin Creator tool and a redesigned submission flow that offers clearer feedback.
The company has also enhanced the ranking and recommendation systems within its plugin directory, ensuring better visibility for tools and surfacing them more effectively during conversations. Users will have the ability to approve specific access permissions for any chosen plugin.
Additionally, ChatGPT Sites, which allow users to build lightweight websites, can now host these plugins. This feature enables users to share their applications with colleagues, who can utilize them with their own linked data and permissions.
OpenAI is also incorporating support for the proposed MCP Events specification, which permits plugins to initiate automations triggered by events within connected applications. The company aims to simplify the addition and management of these automations.
