A recording device was discovered plugged into a TV’s USB port within an executive meeting room.
An OpenAI engineer has been arrested following the discovery of a “sophisticated recording device” hidden within one of the company’s offices. The employee, 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, faces charges related to intercepting oral communications, as reported by The San Francisco Standard.
OpenAI stated in a post that it utilized its AI models to analyze the device and trace its origin, ultimately identifying the specific employee who planted it just days prior.
Authorities confirmed that the device was found connected to a TV in an executive conference room, wrapped in toilet paper and installed on or around September 28th.
OpenAI terminated the employee and referred the matter to the FBI. Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested on Friday and has remained in custody, making his first appearance in federal court on Tuesday.
“We discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden in one of our offices,” OpenAI stated. “We utilized our models to understand the device’s origins, identifying that a specific employee planted it a few days earlier.” The company referred the incident to the FBI, expressing gratitude for the quick action taken by agents and prosecutors. The FBI’s investigation remains ongoing.
OpenAI confirmed there are no indications that the individual accessed or exfiltrated sensitive data, including model weights, source code, or customer information. The employee has been terminated.
“We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, considering it a matter of national importance,” OpenAI noted. The company highlighted that its security program is designed to counter various threats, from insider risks to nation states, and this case exemplifies how AI can help mitigate such sophisticated security threats.
