OpenAI has introduced new cloud-based workspace agents capable of independently executing tasks such as generating reports on product feedback.

These innovative "workspace" agents, integrated within ChatGPT, are now accessible to subscribers of OpenAI's Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans, empowering them to automate various business functions. OpenAI highlighted their capabilities through examples such as an agent designed to scour the web for product feedback and compile reports in Slack, or a sales agent proficient in drafting follow-up emails within Gmail.

The introduction of these agents aligns with a growing industry-wide focus on AI agents, a trend significantly amplified by the viral success of OpenClaw—an AI agent previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, which famously branded itself as the "AI that actually does things." Notably, OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger has since joined OpenAI. The company also faces stiff competition from Anthropic, which provides its own Claude Cowork agent capable of performing tasks using local computer files, alongside a distinct platform for developing autonomous agents.

Designed for collaborative environments, OpenAI's new workspace agents can be shared across organizations, enabling teams to "build an agent once, use it together in ChatGPT or Slack, and improve it over time." The company emphasizes that these agents are engineered to "gather context from the right systems, follow team processes, ask for approval when needed, and keep work moving across tools."

This new development, however, might foreshadow the eventual phasing out of OpenAI’s "GPTs," the custom chatbots initially unveiled in 2023. OpenAI describes workspace agents as an "evolution" of GPTs, confirming that "GPTs will remain available while teams test workspace agents with their workflows." Furthermore, the company plans to "make it easy to convert GPTs into workspace agents" in the near future. When approached for further details, OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson referred inquiries back to the official blog post, declining to provide additional commentary.
