OpenAI recently initiated the rollout of advertising to users of its free and Go tiers within ChatGPT, a move first announced last month. This introduction to U.S.-based users earlier this month has coincided with criticism from competitors, notably Anthropic, which recently ran a series of high-profile Super Bowl advertisements.

During the India AI summit, TechCrunch engaged OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap to discuss the company's strategy regarding these new advertisements. Lightcap emphasized that the process is inherently iterative and underscored the paramount importance of safeguarding user privacy and trust.

“Well, this is going to be an iterative process for sure. This is something we are committed to getting right. What does that look like? It means obviously maintaining user trust at a very high level. It means getting privacy right,” Lightcap stated, highlighting the foundational principles guiding their approach.

He further articulated that, when executed thoughtfully, advertising has the potential to enrich the overall product experience for users. Lightcap requested a few months for OpenAI to demonstrate its efficacy in rolling out this new product offering.

“It means really creating a delightful product experience. We think ads done right can be additive to a product experience. And so it’ll take iteration, it’ll take time, but we’re just starting out. So maybe give us a few months and see how it goes,” he elaborated, expressing optimism for the future.

Lightcap did not, however, provide details on whether the company is currently considering expanding its advertising initiatives beyond the U.S. market.

Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly responded to Anthropic's Super Bowl ads in a lengthy post on X, labeling the rival "dishonest" and accusing them of developing an expensive product primarily serving "rich people."

“More importantly, we believe everyone deserves to use AI and are committed to free access, because we believe access creates agency. More Texans use ChatGPT for free than the total number of people who use Claude in the US, so we have a differently-shaped problem than they do,” Altman asserted, reinforcing OpenAI's commitment to broad accessibility.

Reports from various outlets indicate that OpenAI is charging advertisers $60 for 1,000 impressions, a rate considered unusually high. Adweek noted last month that OpenAI is seeking a minimum commitment of $200,000 from advertisers. More recently, The Information reported that Shopify is now enabling its merchants to advertise on ChatGPT through its Shop Campaigns ad network, joining an initial group of testers that includes major brands like Target, Williams-Sonoma, and Adobe.
