OpenAI has not yet provided a clear timeline for when subscribers will gain access to the highly anticipated Astra model.
Just hours after the debut of GPT-6 Astra, CEO Sam Altman offered a public apology for what he termed a "messy rollout." This came after paying customers, who had anticipated immediate access to this cutting-edge model, were left waiting.
The company previously celebrated Astra as a "generational leap in capability" and a signpost to the "AGI era." While the model was initially released to select enterprise clients using the Daybreak cybersecurity platform, plans called for a broader rollout to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as availability via the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock in the coming days.
This staggered approach, which seemingly prioritized business clients, frustrated many paying subscribers, particularly those on the Pro tier who usually receive early access. Comments on X, where OpenAI staff announced the launch, were filled with complaints regarding the lack of availability.
"We are working towards getting Astra in everyone’s hands as quickly as we can," Altman stated on X, acknowledging the user disappointment. He expressed understanding of the frustration and asked for patience, though he did not provide a specific timeline for full access, noting it might be possible over the weekend but cannot be guaranteed.
To ease concerns, Codex engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux announced that users would receive a "banked reset" for every day access to Astra is denied on their paid ChatGPT plans. Additionally, technical difficulties persisted, including a delay in deploying the official blog post. OpenAI also faced scrutiny from safety advocates regarding the model's reasoning capabilities, which were deemed harder to monitor, a concern exacerbated by recent security incidents like the AI agents attacking Hugging Face. Consequently, the release was delayed by weeks to enhance safety measures.
This is not the first time OpenAI has struggled with product launches. Altman previously admitted to "totally screwing up" the rollout for the previous major release, GPT-5, which was plagued by technical glitches and the controversial removal of the GPT-4o model.
